Bleeds in Illustrator???

New Here ,
Apr 16, 2010 Apr 16, 2010

When setting up an AI for export to print.

How do I setup the bleeds?

say the doc is 5inx5in

Do I set the artboard to 5x5 pushing the bleed objects off the edge and then export to PDF setting a bleed in the PDF export options?

Or do I set the artboard to 5.125x5.125 and export to PDF at the same dimensions telling the printshop that the bleed is .125 all around?

Thank you in advance for anything to help clear this up for me!

Yes this is the correct way to do it.

If you were to make the artboard bigger to accommodate the bleed that would make the crop marks (if added) incorrect.

Ok thank you for the info

So then I suppose that if I want to have a bleed in my PDF, I am forced to export to PDF straight from Ilustrator?

Hard as it may be to believe, Illustrator cannot export to PDF. You must save a PDF. This is not a small difference. If I edit my Illustrator file, then save a Smallest File Size PDF for my client, then continue to edit the file, save, then quit, I will not have an editable Illustrator file to go back to, I will end up saving over the non-editable lo-res PDF. In InDesign, I can export a PDF, keep working, save, quit, then go back to the fully-functional InDesign file.

Be sure, when you save a PDF you either immediately close the file, immediately re-save as an Adobe Illustrator file, or use Save a Copy instead of Save As to make the PDF (which means editing the filename to remove “copy” from the fuçking filename).

So I sent the files to print as 8.5x11 and they told me they wanted them as 8.75x11.25.

They also preferred as JPEG and not PDF...

I guess this is just something that changes from printer to printer?

Some old timers do.

Or maybe this is something to make you consider changing printer.
