With the bounding box turned on for the Selection tool (black arrow), when I move an object, the scale handles disappear. I need the side handles for line-ups on pattern tiles. I have a feeling Hide Edges is involved, but I use Hide Edges to hide anchor points on selected objects temporarily. My work gets very complicated. Having Smart Guides turned on or off doesn't help, but I usually have that turned off because it gets in the way. I've tried several different Preference settings. I've tried clicking down on an object before moving. I've tried using modifier keys... Does anyone know a solution for this? I just want to be able to move a selected object and not have the handles disappear while moving.
Please don't tell me to use the pattern tool. It doesn't work for everything. Thank you in advance for any help.

I know what you mean, but have a trick to fix this.
Use the transform tool to see size of your objects. Create a rectangle (option click to get sizes) to that size with stroke & fill of none, then align the group of objects against the rectangle you created.
Then use the transform tool to move around.

Thank you for replying. I did try this several times, also after relaunching and restarting, but it did not resolve the problem. I am also looking for ways around this, but as yet have not found any.

Turn off Realtime drawing in the preferences does not solve this?

It did not.
