Can i make Illustrator Package as InDesign?

Hi guys,

Is there any way to make Illustrator Package images and fonts as InDesign? I check out a script in Internet but the link is broken. That would be great!

Btw, I would like for the future that the link palette in Illustrator would be more functional...double click on the image icon and open it directly in the Finder and not having to make an extra step to look for the menu and then Open in Bridge. What do you think?

Illustrator is at version 16 and has been sold since 1987. That feature has not been added in all those updates over more than a quarter of a century.

No. Illustrator does not provide a "collect for output" command. Nowadays, one usually delivers whole document designs for printing as press-ready PDFs. Because PDFs embed images and fonts, it's usually actually a better workflow (even for InDesign).

A perfectly valid use for a Package function is to transfer artwork along with its associated files & fonts to another computer.

Thanks for the info JETalmage. The thing is that nowdays most work need to pass for many hand. So you might send a PDF Print ready, but other designer might like to work with the original hi-res image from time to time and then added again in the pdf. I guess i fint it easier if you have a separate folder with the original hi-res images than having to extract them one by one all the time.

That point would only hold up, if the user did not save the pdf with the ai file embedded. Besides, if you save your files to a folder for each job, it wouldn't be very hard to zip that folder.

spending 500 dollars for doing a Packaging in Illustrator it seems too much now. I know the app is very complete and i am sure for Press and Printing Houses very useful, but for most folks like me i think it would be nice this feature like InDesign for collecting all the info at once. And not the Adobe Cloud in Illustrator 6 which is 30 dollars a year. I hope somebody will program a nice script to do the job in the future.

You also may want to look into Artfiles.

Artfiles is a standalone app, so you can package multiple .ai files with one drag & drop. Makes fitting on a disk or ftp'ing quicker so you dont have duplicate hi res images/fonts as with scoop. Scoop does cost about $20 less.

Illustrator CS6 on Creative Cloud just had an update that adds the package function: awesome! (And about time.)

Prior to that, I used Scoop, at the link for worker72a.com/ above. Works great.

There is a sample script that comes with Illustrator which will allow you to package the files together just like InDesign. The only downside is it does not package the fonts that are used. All you have to do is transfer the "CollectForOutput" script that is located in the Sample Scripts folder into the Scripts folder. The link below provides step by step instructions.

One way to collect all of the fonts used in an illustrator file is Select> Object> Text objects, Edit-copy. Open a new InDesign file and paste, then Package for output the Indesign file for the fonts only.

Although it's unconscionable that Illustrator does not have a free Package function, Luke's method here is simply brilliant.
