Can't Access a Saved FIle

The Issue:
I saved an illustrator file and then closed the program. After some days, I reopened the program. I could see the preview thumbnail showing my latest edit but when I clicked on it to open, it went back to a much earlier version of the file. This has now happened twice. Please help if you have solved this successfully.

Illustrator 26.2.1 (64-bit)
OS: Windows 10
RAM: 12GB
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6600U CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.81 GHz

This can be caused by the "Save in Background" option. You can turn it off in the preferences > File handling
