Can’t make a new swatch from existing pattern

Hi. I'm trying to create a twill plaid pattern based on a stripe I already created and added to the swatches panel. When I try to drag the twill plaid over to the swatches panel, Illustator doesn't accept it. It's still reading it as the original stipe design.

Has anyone experienced this?
