Hi Group,
I posted on the 25th Oct:-
"Have updated to CS2, everything fine except in Illustrator.
When saving work in the "Save as" or "Save a copy" I get "an unknown error
has occurred"
Even if I open work made prior to the upgrade from CS and then amend it, I
get the same "an unknown error has occurred", when I try to save it
I can save in other formats without problem, but I can't save my work in the
Illustrator format to return to later.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled without success.
Please has anyone else come across this, or can anybody advise a solution to
this problem?
Thanks in advance to all those that take the time to reply.
David "
Since then I have checked the Adobe forum for Illustrator and there appears
to be considerable traffic on this apparent "BUG" in illustrator, it also
seems to be hitting CS as well as CS2.
I find it amazing that Adobe can release software with problems such as
this. How can their credibility withstand issuing software that can't even
save in its own natural format.
It would appear that this bug was evident way back in March, yet here we are
still suffering in November, more that 8 months and still no word from
Adobe.
Any self respecting company would have pulled the offending software from
the shelves until they had a solution, yet Adobe seems not to have even
responded to the problem.
I'm sure there must be thousands of us out here that paid for this defective Adobe software and received a load of junk for their money.
If you feel as strongly as I do about it, how about a mass mailing to the
Adobe forums and let them know how you feel. They might eventually get the
message.

OK - dumb question here DHutchins forgive me if you know this already - have you set up the page tiling properly? If your page tiling is set to Tile Single Full Page, and that page border is off your artwork, it will be a blank page.
Page tiling is set here: File-Print-Setup-Tiling then click Done.
Turn on page tiling display here: View-Show Page Tiling.
Position the tile using the Page Tool (looks like a dotted line page with a crosshair in the lower left corner; often hiding behind the Panning Hand tool).

Basically, I think if you have Acrobat Reader installed (perhaps any version, though I had , you just copy the contents of the folder "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Resource\CMap" to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts\Reqrd\CMaps" (You will likely need to create the CMaps folder) and wahlah (voila) you can save in PDF!

hi please can anyone help!
this moring i open illustrator, all the setting were defaulted as if i had just installed the program, now as many above find i can no longer save any files. 'An error occured' appears with no explanation. I dont have actrobat 8 installed. Does anybody know any solutions, as my disks are up north and i will not be able to retrieve them in time to reinstall and finish my work for a deadline. Also form what i have read above, reinstalling doesnt seem to make a difference. Im rather computer alliterate so may need a standard and uncomplicated explination, thanks.

Dave,
Have you tried moving the hidden
i Illustrator CS/CS2 Settings folder
to the Desktop with Illy closed?
This will remove a number of files, including the aiprefs file and the Workspaces subfolder; the whole folder is restored with the original default settings next time you start Illy.
That is one of the first things to try when a strange issue suddenly occurs, and removing the Workspaces subfolder has solved the issue for one of the first posters in this thread.

thanks so much Jacob and Len i moved the illustrator settings folder to the desktop and now everything seems to working again, fingers crossed. I wonder why it stopped working, the only thing i can think of that i did differently to usual, which may have caused a problem was open the transparency window. I didnt use it though other than a quick browse at its function. I noticed that during this thread someone mention deleteting/defaulting (or some thing) a transprancy folder/file, so maybe this is were a fault lies. Im probably completely wrong, though, it was just a hunch. So thanks once again, now i think i might just finish my work in time for my meeting.

Dave, you are welcome.
I believe the (most common) cause of corruption of files in the Settings folder is errors in Windows saving them. Some people experience it regularly, some never, regardless of Illy version. I am still with 10, and I have never tried it.
So there is no reason not to open, and use, Transparency.

As I needed to send off the pdf's I had over Hotmail, once I clicked ok and attach another my computer screen went grey and told me I had to shut down. Any thoughts? I'm running Mac 10.4.8.

the following action solved all my problems:
Note: I' running XP professional on intel based mac
I have Illustrator CS2 and Adobe Acrobat version 8.0
1. you should have adobe acrobat reader 8.0
2. make hidden files visible
copy file called: AdobeCMapFnt08.Ist
from
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\8.0
to folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts\Reqrd
just copy and paste and you can save it as pdf files and no more errors
I had all the problems mentioned above and I also installed my illustrator CS2
on my another computer which did not allow me to save
pdf files but after
copying the file to Reqrd folder it solved all the problems.
I hope it will solves your problems as well guys!
Good luck!

Simple solutuion that worked!!! Replace the AI CMAPS folder with Reader 8's CMAPS folder 🙂 Perfect! Adobe should just put that up on their website instead of the other unhelpful info they have... it just didnt work. Not everyone upgraded from CS...

All of a sudden, my copy of IllustratorCS2 is exhibiting the dreaded problem with type.
No matter what I do, I cannot save or export any files in Illustrator that have any editable text.
I've tried the suggestions in this thread (and others) and am still having the problem. Running AI 12.0.1 under WinXP Pro SP2 on a Dell Inspiron 6000d notebook with 2GB of RAM.
Seeing as how some people using Illustrator CS3 seem to be having this problem as well, that may strongly discourage me from spending $600 on the CS3 Design Premium upgrade.

Hi guys, unfortunately I too am suffering from this issue with saving ai and pdf files.
I have just upgraded my PC so no memory or system in-efficiencies there. I have been using CS2 for a long time on my old PC with Windows XP and I've had no real issues. Now however I have upgraded to the new PC which is running Vista, it was fine at first the all of sudden the problem has arisen.
I have systematically tried each of the solutions listed in this forum with no luck. Has anyone else found a solution for CS2 running on Vista.
Please help, I have a mountain of work and if I cant get this fixed I won't meet my deadlines!
Thanks in advance :)

I think I just solved the problem in a really easy way. Right click on the Illustrator icon, then select properties. Under compatibility, select run this program in compatibility mode for XP. I saved a file as a pdf and it finally worked! I couldn't figure out all of that stuff with folders, but I have no problems after I did this.

I seem to be having a problem as far as printing and pdfs go with Illustrator CS3. I am working in Vista and have no problems with any of the other CS3 componets. Illustrator saves the pdf when I do a save as as well as an eps...but with both when I go to print the page is empty.
I have tried all the suggestions above and nothing is working.

Not real comforting for me to be having the same problems as the original poster, less than a month short of 2 years later with AI CS3.
I attempt to use it under Vista Ultimate, and Vista Home Premium, on new machines, and AI won't save files under these OSes even in compatability mode, for XP. That is beyond the first file save.
I bought AI CS3 for school, and I'm four lessons behind as of now because I can't save files!
I think I may have found a temporary solution as of today, but first I will reiterate some of the possible, and suspected contributory software factors in MY case.
1. Installing any 3rd party media player, or media codecs.
2. Installing Nero 6 and/or 8
3. Using Macecraft's RegSupremePro current version with default settings.
Now, to what I have managed to do today;
The "only" way i could save any file created in AI CS3 through my testing is the use *.svg eztension. No other native extension will work. After finding that successful, I saved two more files by selecting to change the >Illustrator Options>Version to> CS2, instead of the default CS3 and I could then save in *.ai format. Then I tried de-selecting using "compression," and was able to save the file to the *.ai extension under >Illustrator Options> Version: CS3....for what good this does, [I don't know], can I have a high paying job as an Adobe technical troubleshooter now?

This is an update to my previous post of yesterday.
I've found that saving a file as "RGB" causes a problem. When I change that value "from" CMYK, [apparent default setting], I get a yellow triangle with an exclamation point just to the right of it. But I have no idea what that signifies, or why it should be a problem changing it. If I leave that color mode set to CMYK, I can save my drawings.
Changing the "units" from pt to px may also have something to do with this saving problem.
