I'm getting this message for all my Illustrator CS6 files. I can't save or 'save as' any of them w/out getting this message. I've Googled some answers but no luck. Hoping someone can help on this, thanks!

CS6 is not actually supported for Windows 10. Although it may have been working for you up until now it is possible that Windows may have run an auto-update which may have changed things for you. If that is the case then you might try and see if you can run your computer in Windows 7 compatibility mode.

Since this seems to be a program-wide issue it may also be possible that resetting your Illustrator preferences may help. Doing this process will return Illustrator to its default settings. Hopef

Which system is it?

What's in the files?

Where are you trying to save them?

Is a printer connected, set up as the default printer and turned on? Or as an alternative the PDF printer set up?

Windows 10 and has always run on W10.

All files differ and still get the same message. One a particular is just built with the ai tools, no images or vectors placed.

All my files are saved on my desktop.

Printer is default and is on. Not sure what my printer has to do with me getting this message with all my ai files (old/new).

Illustrator saves information about the printer in your file and therefore checks on the printer when opening and when saving a file. You want to be sure that there is a printer and that it's connected correctly.

Not printer related. All is fine on that level.

If that is the case then you might try and see if you can run your computer in Windows 7 compatibility mode.

Since this seems to be a program-wide issue it may also be possible that resetting your Illustrator preferences may help. Doing this process will return Illustrator to its default settings. Hopefully, this will make it possible to once again save files correctly.

To reset preferences in Windows:

You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching Illustrator and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

To do so: On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator [version number]\ Settings\<Language>. Make sure that Illustrator is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.
