Astute Graphics' Vector First Aid plugin has some features for converting outlined lettering back into editable text objects. One of the features can burn up several minutes or more chugging through a computer's font data to ID a matching font. The current public build of Adobe Illustrator includes a "beta" version of the new Retype feature. It appears to be good at identifying outlined text and images of letters as long as those fonts are available in the Adobe Fonts service. It doesn't work on fonts installed locally in the computer system.
