I have a document with many elements, I am trying to copy some objects and paste into new layers to create slightly different designs for presentation. I copy the objects, create and name a new layer then 'paste in place' and have tried 'paste' and the item pastes back into the original layer. I have selected the new layer, I have locked the source layer and tried pasting, I have hidden the source layer and it still won't paste into the new layer, this has only recently started happening. I have been using Illustrator for over 20 years and am not a novice. I have tried everything I can think of but cannot create multiple layered artwork / designs. I can create new graphics in the new layers but just can't paste to them.
Has anyone experienced this before? I am using CS6 16.0.4 installed from disks on a late 2013 27" iMac intel core i5 OS X Yosemite 10.10.3.
Many thanks in advance

Is Paste Remembers Layers unticked in the Layers palette flyout/dropdown (it should be for this)?
Thank you so much Jacob, I feel a bit silly now as it was so, so simple.
You are welcome, David.
It is one of the sneaky things that just creep up on you.
If you first make the new layer and then use copy paste with Paste Remembers Layers turned on, just move the objects (which still are active) to the new layer with the small square an the right end of the original layer in the Layer panel.
Thanks very much Larry, it was burning my head out... all the years I've been using Illustrator too!
Wow... so simple!
very helpfull many thanks
You are welcome, umairk.
I cannot believe I've been putting up with that not working for so long!
Much love for you for that solution, Jacob! One of the "I knew it was simple yet I didn't goole it for so long" issues...
You are welcome, Ani. It is good to see that some old threads live.
... as long as you're able to even find to new post.
Where do I find this Paste Remember Layers or the flyout/dropdown palette?
It's in the Layers panel, which you can find in Window > Layers. And then open its menu.
Thank you Monica! I found it! Problem solved!
Very useful tip... thank you...
That was it!

Thank you Jacob! I had the same problem, now solved!
You are welcome, A.
I had the same problem... Using Illustrator for years, suddenly this happened... Never heard of the 'paste remembers layer' option before, great solution. Thanks!
For my part you are welcome, snow.
I you have never heard of Revert either, you may have been lucky.
You are welcome, Neil.
