Create Custom template

Community Beginner ,
Sep 03, 2023 Sep 03, 2023

My objective is to create & use a new custom template as my regular goto default, with minimum keystrokes.  Windows 10, Adobe illustrator 2023.

I just want to :

1) create a custom template (different wdith and height) - I have done that and saved to*.AIT file.

2) Place AIT file in the corect template folder- This is confuing.  Should it be an existing folder, or can I name it anyhting I want ?  Where should it go ?

3) Ensure Illustrator 2023 displays this new custom template on startup, under the default presets, which currently say "A4, POSTCARD, COMMON, HDV,More presets".  I have a custom template, but it is within the "More presets". Effectively, want to reorder the above dsefauklt presets that are displayed, so my new one is first.

If it is relevant,  can see "Blank templates" folder under this folder:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 2023\Cool Extras\en_GB\Templates

I have this file structure.  The second one is new, which I created.  AIT is in the second one.

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 2023\Cool Extras\en_GB\Templates\Blank Templates

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 2023\Cool Extras\en_GB\Templates\My Templates

In order to get that you need to save it as a New Document profile. That is a normal AI file, saved in a specific location.

Here is a list of locations: https://www.vektorgarten.de/illustrator-settings.html

But then still, you will have to scroll down in the new document dialog box to get to your custom templates.

If you create a New Document Profile, as Monika suggested (which is color managed and templates are not).

I would recommend checking the "legacy "File New "interface" in the Preferences, it saves searching and clicks for the preset.

Thnak you both for response.  I have created my template at the correct location now:

This PC > Windows (C) > Users > [User name] > AppData > Roaming > Adobe > Adobe Illustrator [version] settings > [locale] > x64 > New document profiles

However, when I do "file", "new from template", it defaults to this location:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 2023\Cool Extras\en_GB\Templates (See attached JPEG)

Any idea, how I change THIS default now to reflect the custom template location ?

Many thanks
