Crop to a circle

how can I crop an image to other then a simple rectangle?

Cropping is always rectangular, you may want to use a clipping mask:

But when I make a circle the clipping option is greyed and not able to be selected.

Do you have the circle in front of the image and both the image and the circle selected?

Put the circle on top of the image.

Select both the circle and the image.

Choose Object > Clipping Mask > Make
