Bug Report:
1.) Versions: Illustrator V26.5 & 28.7.1, InDesign V17.4 & 19.5
2.) iMac 2017-2019 (Intel i7 processors, 32 GB DDR4 RAM, Radeon Pro 575 graphics, with some variations, but no M1). OS is Ventura 13.6.1.
3.) Steps to reproduce: run any of the above versions of Illustrator or InDesign in my school classroom, attempt to place or control any element on an artboard, or click into a manual-entry input text-box.
4.) Expected result: mouse cursor works normally in any version, on any computer, at all times. Mouse should work exactly as well as WACOM tablet input. Actual result: mouse cursor stops moving and updating in any input areas of the program windows, incluing text boxes (like where one manually enters dimensions), on seemingly random computers in 1 of 3 computer labs with Adobe licenses installed. WACOM tablet input device isn't affected by this at all.
Here's the expanded version. I'm a graphic design teacher in a public school, and I teach Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign in my classes. This bug is similar to other bugs I've seen pop up on this forum where the mouse cursor disappears just in the 'working' (input) areas of Illustrator and InDesign. The purpose of this post is to ask the Adobe community if they're experienceing this bug, if there's a known solution, and if I can get my school district technical support to implement a solution. Thanks in advance for reading everything!
Problem:
Cursor stops moving/updating in input areas, including artboard and text boxes (such as when clicking to type in a dimension), which renders using a mouse to precisely place and control new elements on the artboard impossible. Cursor is fine in OS-generated windows, such as the Save pop-up window. It also works fine in any program menus, when selecting tools, in the Properties/side panels, or other non-input or navigation portions of the program. This problem only seems to occur in Illustrator and InDesign, and it seems to affect both programs simultaneously. Photoshop seems to be totally unaffected. There are 2 other labs in my school using this software, and this cursor issue doesn't affect either of those labs at all, seemingly. Lastly, when a tech support professional remotely accesses my computer lab, they cannot see this phenomenon: the cursor works normally for them.
Hardware:
A class of around 30 iMacs, and the hardware is all from around 2017-2019 (Intel processors, 32 GB DDR4 RAM, Radeon Pro 575 graphics, with some variations, but no M1). OS is Ventura 13.6.1. There are also WACOM tablets that are usually disconnected from the computers, but they're part of the story.
Software:
Adobe Illustrator & Indesign, 2022 & 2024
Timeline:
2021-22 school year, I was unaware of this bug.
2022-23 school year, 2 of my computers started to exhibit the cursor bug.
2023-24 school year, almost half of my computers exhibited the bug, but at random times, and it may have depended on which students were logged into the computer.
This has continued through this school year so far.
Temporary Fixes:
- WACOM tablets, when used, are unaffected by this bug. This works for some students, but not others.
- Manually update software, then restart computer. This fixes the bugs on some computers, but not all. The bug comes back eventually on some computers.
- The 2024 update seemed to solve the problem for some computers, but not all.
Questions:
- What causes/triggers this bug?
- Why does it only affect Illustrator and InDesign, but not Photoshop?
- Why would this only affect one computer lab, and not another, even though they're in the same school, same network, and using the same licenses?
- Is there a straightforward solution to this problem?
Thanks again for reading!
