Using File/Place to import a PNG screen shot, that I took from my iPhone, into Illustrator the image appears distorted and colorfully pixelated, see attached.  Any fixes for this issue?

Please try and open the image in Photoshop and then resave it.

I have already successfully opened screen shots in Photoshop, without the distortion, and resaved them.  That definitely works.  I don't want to do that though.  Illustrator used to Place the screen shots without any distortion.  I'm more interested in a fix within Illustrator.  Especially since this is something that I commonly do in my design work.

Illustrator simply isn't able to import each and every flavour of PNG.

Specifically, save it in 8-bit RGB. Illustrator doesn't support 16-bit, which is what this appears to be.

"Illustrator doesn't support 16-bit, which is what this appears to be."

I guess it is something else, Illustrator seems to place 16 bits png files fine.

So it does. Did that change recently or am I missing something?

I don't think it is the 16 bits, I can place 16 bits png files saved in Photoshop even in CC2017.

It is probably more a problem of the iPhone files.

CS6 seems fine with them too. But I can find lots of references to Illustrator not supporting 16-bit files, including this from Ashutosh:

I also have faint and probably false memories of testing this with PS files a few years ago.

Edit: Although, all the references do seem to ultimately go back to iPhone screenshots.

Converting and saving them as 8 bits in Photoshop seems to fix them.

And they stay fixed if you convert them back to 16 bits in Photoshop and save them.
