Draw inside

Hi Community!

Very new to illustrator and trying to recolour a logo- I want to create a colour fade using various coloured skin tones across this lettering. I believe the first step is to "draw inside" the image, but when I try and do this the "draw inside" option is disabled- there are no other images so I don't think it's a grouping issue.

Any suggestions please?

Illustrator uses vectors and you show an image.

You need to convert it to vectors to use it in Illustrator.

With the Pen tool or with Image Trace.
