Duplicate files

I'm having a rather strange problem that Illustrator duplicates the files I'm working on and can't be erased.

How are the numbers being added to font of 2 filename at top? Are you typing that, or is it being added without you doing that? What OS version and language? How are the dates on the files, are the 2 at the top the newset and result of auto save. In the prefs for "File Saving" you can turn  off auto save, it is the 1st & 4th settings.

I'm embargoing this question - just kidding!

These are different file names and AFAIK (someone will correct me) autosave adds suffix only so I don't think these are auto save files, but if these are temporary files for auto backup and/or auto save you probably can't delete them if Illy is running.

Try turning off auto save and auto back up and see what happens. Quit Illy, see what happens.
