Hello - I have received a file with an embedded image that shows a white dotted line bounding box. I realize it's nothing but visual but where did it come from and how do I turn it off.

Thanks for any helpdotted line around the piece of cakedotted line around the piece of cake

What kind of file did you open?

Can you select that edge?

Can you move that cake?

Hi Monika - Illustrator file, it's a CMYK image with an opacity mask in the Transparency palette. I can move the image anyplace and the bounding box follows.

BUT when I click overprint preview to check my separations, the line disappears.

It's more of a "What the heck" curiosity than an issue. It doesn't print.

Does it perhaps vanish when you go into CPU preview?

Yes it does vanish in CPU preview.

Like I said, it's not something I'm going to lose sleep over, I just had never seen it before. I'll start toggleing CPU Preview off and on with some other jobs and see what might show up. I've never known the use for CPU Preview. Prepress I don't get that much time to try things out.

CPU preview uses the internal processor for generating the preview. Normally your graphic card processor is used. It's faster, but less accurate.
