Expanding text creates a lot of anchor points

Why is this happening when I expand the text? I used Illustrator a couple of days ago, and everything was functioning normally then.

That does not look like an unusual number of anchor points for expaned text.

What were you expecting the anchor points to be like?

This is just a matter of which selection tool you are using. 

Here is the exact same bit of expanded text - with the Selection Tool and with the Direct Selection Tool.

The anchors are there, but only the Direct Selection shows you the anchors.

I got the anchor points with whatever selection tool I was using, and never the box around the text. But as I wrote above I had turned off bounding box. It worked perfectly when I turned that on again.
