Exporting issue: Size of image becomes larger

Hi there,

I have a question: on illustrator when I choose a dimension for say 1200 px by 628 px, why when I export the image the it becomes larger than it is?

I exported as jpg and the dimension becomes 5000px x 2617px. Why is this? how can I fix this?

In new documents in the Advanced section: I have Color Mode as CMYK and Raster Effects: High 300 ppi

When I export it:

Color Model: CMYK Quality: Medium

Compression Method: Baseline Resolution: High 300 ppi Anti-Aliasing: Type Optimized

Is it an issue with the way I set my settings? How do people for the Adobe Illustrator community normally export their files to be the exact size they want it to be?

Kay,

You have come across the effects of the double meaning of pixels, both the general one of the fundamental relative unit of an image and the actual unit used by Illy (job description Adobe Illustrator), which (also) has the following effects when also working with Indesign and Acrobat/Reader:

You should be aware that Illy shows you everything corresponding to 72 PPI (1 pixel being 1/72 inch).

This means that Illy sees your 1200 pixels as 1200/72 inches = 16 2/3 inches, and when you ask for 300 PPI she gives you 16 2/3 times 300 = 5000 pixels.

To keep the size, Export at 72 PPI.

Why only Medium? Because I thought setting it high/large was playing affects to why it was enlarging when exporting.

Didn't work for me. Tried taking a new artboard of 2000x2000 72 ppi... After exporting the image, resolution becomes 8334x8334.

Ara,

I believe you are exporting at 300 PPI: when you multiply 2000 by 300/72 you get 8333 1/3, rounded up to 8334.

You need to export at 72 PPI, whichever way you do it. The legacy Save for Web does it by default.

I had the same issue with exporting from Illustrator CC. My client wants the work at 300dpi. No matter what format I exported the artwork in (jpg, eps, psd, pdf), it would be twice the size as the original. After a lot of frustration, I decided I would just open the exported image in Photoshop and resize it there. But I wondered if maybe a setting needed to be changed in Illustrator so I called and spoke directly to someone at Adobe about this issue. The rep said that there is an algorithm built into the application itself that causes the image to become larger if it is exported at a size larger than 72dpi. (probably what Jacob was talking about), and that opening the exported file in Photoshop and resizing it there was the best way to go. Hope this helps!

Hi, Would putting it to 72 PPI not decrease the quality of the image? Im desgining for t-shirts

If you have a defined pixel x pixel size you need to export to, no, because you've already set that in the artboard options.

If you're exporting a physical size (inches by inches or cm etc.), yes, because it will mean less pixels in the same area.
