Extreme lag when selecting in Adobe Illustrator 2023 using Apple M1 Mac

Community Beginner ,
Dec 26, 2023 Dec 26, 2023

When selecting an object with the selection tool (V) I would need to wait for awhile to be fully selected. If not then it will move together with my cursor. I tried to delete, uninstall Adobe Illustrator (and everything I could think of) but there's a major lag and bug on the selection tool. Is anybody experiencing the same thing and could find a way to fix it?

Hello @Tiffany295751729sca,

I'm sorry to hear about the lag issue you're facing with the selection tool in Adobe Illustrator on your Apple M1 Mac. To help diagnose the problem, could you please provide some additional information?

  • When did the issue start? Did it happen after a particular update, change, or installation?

  • Have you noticed any patterns or specific scenarios where the lag is more prominent? For example, does it occur with specific types of objects or documents?

  • Have you made any recent updates to your system, Illustrator, or any third-party plugins?

Additionally, I recommend trying to work in macOS Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. Safe Mode can help identify if the problem is related to third-party extensions or drivers.

Try using the Illustrator app only in Safe Mode and observe if the lag issue persists with the selection tool. Let me know the results, and we can proceed with further troubleshooting based on the information you provide.

Best,

Anshul Saini

Thanks for the update. Yes, there is no lag or selection delay in Safe Mode. However in safe mode, many fonts are not available, and I'm not able to work on my client's projects.

  • When did the issue start? Started a day ago. Nothing in particular that triggred it.

  • Have you noticed any patterns or specific scenarios where the lag is more prominent? No. Just the selection tool (V) that delays. It will take about few seconds for the selection tool to fully "select" then I can only procceed the next action if not then it will just move along with my cursor.

  • Have you made any recent updates to your system, Illustrator, or any third-party plugins? No

Just to add on, maybe the issue started as I'm using my company mac and they recently released an update / policy that we'll need to update for our Mac.

Thank you for providing additional details. It's helpful to know that the issue started about a day ago and that it seems to be related to the recent update or policy on your company's Mac.

Since the lag or selection delay is not present in Safe Mode, it indicates that some third-party application or system process might be causing interference with Illustrator. To identify the culprit, you can follow these steps:

  • Think about any new applications or updates you might have installed recently. Try opening applications one by one and observe when the lag issue occurs.

  • Ensure that your operating system is up-to-date. Check for any pending system updates and install them.

  • If your company has recently implemented new policies or updates, it's worth checking if there are specific restrictions or settings that might impact Illustrator's performance.

  • Open the Activity Monitor on your Mac (Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor) and observe the resource usage when Illustrator is running. Look for any spikes or unusual activity.

  • Fonts can sometimes cause unexpected behavior. Check if there are any font management applications running and try disabling them temporarily to see if it makes a difference.

If you can pinpoint the specific application or process causing the issue, you can either update, reinstall or adjust its settings accordingly. Please let me know if you find any specific patterns or culprits during this investigation. If you have further questions or need assistance, feel free to ask.

Best,

Anshul Saini
