The title pretty much says it all. I cannot change the color of any object if it is in a group. Once I ungroup, I'm able to change the color to any color in my document. However, if I'm trying to sample a color from a PNG that I've brought in, I have to hold shift to select that color, if I don't the object becomes no stroke no fill. This started about a month ago and I've never had the issue before. I'm running Illustrator 24 and am completely updated.

Works for me on Mac OS Monterey.

Well, not for me on Sonoma.

you say that this started about a month ago. Do you remember what you changed then? Maybe installed a plugin or a system extension? Updated the system?
Did you already reboot the computer?
Did you try and reset the preferences (this will erase your settings)
Does it work when you boot into Safe Mode?

The only change I can think of is that I changed from the Illustrator only plan to the entire suite, but I don't think that would have anything to do with it? No plug ins or extensions. I've rebooted several times. I reset all the preferences and checked in safe mode. All still the same issues.

Changing the plan should not affect this.
Did you notice any other trouble with modifier keys (ctrl, cmd, Alt, Shift, for some tools tilde and several others)?

No, the only difference is the eyedropper. It's not completely unusable as I can work around, but it's inconvenient.

Does it get better when you embed the placed image?

No, embedding makes no difference.

I can, however, sample colors from images outside of Illustrator (on a web page for ex.) without having to press shift, or doing anything extra.

Anyone? This is still unsolved.

Does it also happen when you boot into Safe Mode?

Then please report this on https://illustrator.uservoice.com
Please provide a precise description of the steps you are taking when picking up the color, your system information and possibly a demo file so people can take a look at the object hierarchy.

Looks like it's already been reported by someone. I guess that helps to know it's not just me!

Then you might want to create an account there and add your vote. That gives the engineers the option to contact you and also you get notified of the progress on the issue.
