File-->New, Recent is BLANK

I can see recent files on the home page. However, when I go to create new and use my 'Recent' it is completely blank. This is the second time this has occurred, and is quite frustrating.

What gives? How do I repopulate this?

Or is there no interface element at all?

 All templates are gone and there would be no interface for creating a new template if I hadnt set up a new 11by17.

This is not a fix unfortunately. I can see my recent files in the home page, and can open recent files via File-->Open Recent Files. I tried this / resetting preferences last time, did nothing beyond just resetting to default.

Illustrator is having issues populating New Document templates with 'Recent' templates.
