file new freezes

on my dell laptop occasionaly when i choose file new illustrator freezes, it opens the new file but i unable to x out and close the document selection.. is there a fix for this besides alt control delete and using task manager to end illustrator?

Do you reboot the system regularly?

Does that happen when there are already a couple of files open?

Which system and version is it?
