Filled shapes turn white when on top of other filled shapes

I am stymied. I'm not a power user, but pretty close. Why are these shapes turning transparent white when placed on other shapes? I've tried changing the CPU vs GPU view, quitting & restarting, copy & paste, etc. 

Please help!
