Filling in open paths

Hello all,

I am in illustaror making a vector from a scetch. I mad this by tracing the lines with the pen tool, so it is made up of a lot of intersecting paths, some of which are open. I am really happy with the outline but am having so much trouble coloring it in.

My first though was to turn each "section" (for example the pants) into a compound path and fill that, but when I do it leaves these patchesof open space. See below.

I am trying to avoid needing to connect each path, much of the art style above relies on some open pieces.

Any advice on how to fill in the areas between all these connected paths?
