Lools like there are no ways to force Guides to appear "behind" artwork?
I tried drawing Guides separate on the bottom most layer to no avail.

They always show in "front" of everything?

I searched for a Preferences to no avail.

No, I don't want to use Grids...

@Roger Breton I usually create a dedicated layer for guides and if I need to I can quickly hide the 'guide layers' in the layers panel.

You are right.

If you want guides behind other objects, you'd have to use regular paths instead (like the ones that can be created in the Object menu > Path > Split into Grid dialog.

Well, in your initial post you were talking about getting (the visibility of) guides behind other objects, as one can do with the grid, but not with guides.

As per your description it was not obvious that you were talking just about hiding guides altogether (or layers that only consist of guides).

I'm sorry I could not "better" express my problem.
I'm "sure" I could not hide Guides created on a separate layer by hiding the Layer itself which was the behavior I expected. I remember FreeHand always drew Guide on a separate Layer...
