Help - strange grid lines?

I somehow have gotten into this mode and have no idea how to get out. I am a basic user. If you can shell me how to get out of this it would be greatly appreciated.

This is the outline view. View > Preview on GPU gets you out.

Or are you wondering about the rectangles in there?
