How do I keep my layer format when I copy/paste an object from one document to another?

I made a puppet for Animator in Illustrator. However, when I copy the art from its original document and paste it into a different documet, it losses it's layers orginization. How do I retain the layer work that I did when copying art from one document to another?

Thanks ahead of time for all the help.

See if going to the Layers panel menu and toggling on Paste Remembers Layers before you copy the layers helps.
