Hello, I used the curve tool to make a word but I cannot remove the gap in the middle. I want it to be transparent. How do I do remove it?

While it worked for all other letters, for some reason, the a produced an error. "Can't make a compound path. all objects in a compound path must be paths and they cannot be brushed or be part of an object" 

I made it the same way as the rest.

I realised that there was an uncessnessary line connected so I had to undo it. Tried the same process and the outside is transparent again and the inside is solid again
