How to add torn edges to a vector?

Hey so I'm trying to add a torn edge effect to a vector that looks like the pages of an open book, but can't figure out how. The "torn edge" effect doesn't do what I want (it just results in a black and white image with the same shape), and I haven't been able to find a way to add a clipping mask to the edges of the shape. I dont want to have to completely redo the shape, so is there any way to add the effect I want?

IMHO, the method that will give you the most authentic looking results is tearing some paper, creating an image of the torn edge by scanning it in a flatbed scanner (or you can try taking a photo of it; scanning will work better), and then auto-tracing the results. You can try using the Live Trace functions in Illustrator. One other method I like is using Photoshop to create "work paths" from selections. It often generates more anchor points, but the results tend to look more accurate. Once the image of the torn paper edge is auto-traced into a vector-based object you can use the Pathfinder tools or path editing tools to join the torn edge to the desired object.

Thats not really what I'm going for. I'm looking for something more of its aged so the edges are more frayed from hundreds of years of wear and tear, which I cant easily replicate

So you want torn edges, but you don't want torn edges?

Please show a picture of what you want. I'm already guessing it will be difficult or even impossible to produce with vector graphics.

Okay, so instead of tearing paper, do a Google image search on "old document edges" pick one or more that you like, then proceed as BobbyH5280 has suggested.

Though I agree with Monika Gause; what you want may not be possible with vector graphics.
