How to create this with squares instead of circles?

Someone in the past supplied me with the attached Illustrator image. How would I go about recreating this with squares gradually shrunk and smushed, instead of circles?  I don't need the fade-out-to-white addressed as that is a separate overlay layer, but I can't get my head around how to recreate the effect of the object not only getting smaller and smaller, but also flatter in perfectly aligned and angled rows... Step and repeat, plus...? Thank you!

If this is vector, you can select the shapes then go to Effect>Convert to Shape>Rectangle.

Wow, that was interesting, didn't know that existed. I tried both absolute and relative settings, though, and didn't really get what I wanted--the spacing wasn't consistent. (Attached). I think I have to start over with creating squares/rectangles. 😞
