How to drag to select multiple anchor points instead of selecting them individually?

Doesn't the Direct Selection tool work for you?

Only if I start from outide the canvas. Otherwise, the entire object moves.

I am zoomed in and attempting to select multiple anchor points of a single object.

Have you tried doing the anchor point selecting work in Outline View?

Check if using the Lasso tool helps.

Or try turning on the "Object Selection by Path Only" option in the application preferences.
