How to joint these paths?

I am trying to joint these paths. I am looking for the result shown in the sample picture. Using Illustrator CS6. Thanks for your help!

1. Select both paths.
2. Object > Path > Outline Stroke.
3. Select the horizontal path and the top shape.
4. Choose Align to Selection in the Align panel.

6. Align vertical bottom.
7. 
8. The paths should look like this:
   
9. Select all and Pathfinder > Unite.
10. 
11. Draw a rectangle the width of the area you want to delete. No Stroke, fill color doesn't matter.

13. Select all shapes. Pathfinder > Minus Front.

Here is another method.

Object > Path > Outline Stroke.

Object > Live Paint.

Expand Live Paint.

Pathfinder > Unite.
