How to make a connected wormhole wireframe?

I'm trying to make a wormhole in Illustrator out of a wireframe but unsure how. I can get a wireframe to warp but I have no idea how to make it like this:

This wormhole can just be drawn with the Pen tool.

Are you familiar with it?
