Please see the video for an example of this issue. I am increasingly getting this, especially on my Cintiq tablet. As you can see, increasing the size of the handles in preferences does nothing to improve this. Does anyone else have experience of this and can suggest a solution?

This issue seems to be resolved to large extent by turning on “Highlight anchors on mouse over” in Preferences > Selection & Anchor Display. Video attached. Should this be reported as a bug?

What happens if you use a mouse instead?

Does it help when you turn on Smart Guides?

They will at least tell you when you have hit the handle exactly.

Hey. Thanks for the tip. I've checked and turning on Smart Guides seems to resolve the issue. It's not to do with user accuracy though – Illustrator seems to register the click on the handle better when Smart Guides are active. I've found a better solution that I'll post as a correct answer.
