I can't open the .eps file on the illustration,

I used illustration CS5, and I received the .eps file from my friend, when I clicked to open the .eps file, I saw the warning "can't open the illustration. Could not complete the requested operation."

Could you help me with this case.

And your friend cannot save an AI file for version CS5?

Why does this need to be an EPS and what's inside? text, gradients, patterns, brushes?

Is there an AI file embedded in the EPS?
