As I was saving out one of my AI files I noticed that my Illustrator 2021 was saving my file version as Illustrator 2020 and it said that it was compatible with illustrator 24 (which is the 2020 version of Illustrator) and I wanted to double check online that working with a file in Illustrator 2021 would still allow users on 2020 to open my file.

Unless you use the new "3D and materials" effects. Those are not compatible with lower versions. It looks like they don't get expanded when opening in a lower version and also are kept live when re-saving the file. But in case some aspect of those objects is edited, you will cause chaos.

So I would definitely keep an eye on that aspect and be very careful with them.
