Illustrator can't read png files

Hi there - Illustrator has only recently stopped displaying/importing png files in my documents. 

I get the error message "Illustrator could not read the link ….png. Please replace with a valid link"

 

I'm working on version 25.4.8 and the work iMac I'm using still operates on OS Mojave.

 

Any help appreciated. Many thanks…

I launched Illustrator version 24.3 and that has indeed worked.
