Illustrator CC - How is this effect achieved?

How is the grainy effect done on this splash screen art? Is this a filter or what? I'm assuming the entire composition was done in Illustrator, but of course I could be wrong!

1) Postprocessing via Photoshop

2) Grainy texture and blending modes in Illustrator
