Illustrator Cropping tool turning on and off

Hi. Sometimes I can use my crop image tool like normal. Other times it will turn on and off quickly without being able to use it. I have tried saving, closing and restarting the file and the computer. Some files do it more regularly nut ohters not. I would love to understand why this is happening so I can fix things on my master file. Thanks in advance 🙂

That photo has been rotated - could that be the cause?

How large are your files? The placed ones and the AI files?

When did you last reboot the computer?

I usually use files this size and rotate to crop and dont have any issues. Rebooted as soon as I realized it was happeneing again. Wondering if it could be some kind of glitch in my master file? When I open a new file and copy the image in it crops fine.

So it always works in a new file?

Then it could be your file having a problem. 

In that case I would copy all objects to a new file in order to prevent worse things from happening.
