Illustrator Files Won't Open When I Click on them or open from illustrator!

A few months ago my illustrator files stopped opening on my first attempt. 

It doesn't matter if I open them internally through the file > open or if I double-click on them from my finder (I'm on a mac) or if I right click and select open with illustrator. 

It is sooooo frustrating and I don't know how to resolve the problem.

Anybody else?
