Illustrator Icon Cut Outs

Hi Everyone,

I'm stuck again.

I am trying to create icons (not just social media icons) with a gold foil "coloring" and the shape/icon transparent. I have tried putting the shape I want to cut out on top and using minus front, but it's not working. I can get it to work on simple shapes, but the complexity of the foil asset is obviously not letting it work. I can't figure out what I am missing. I have been searching for hours on how to do this, but I am clearly missing a step.

I have attached a screen of what is going on, the two rectangular assets are copies, I was hoping to show the path problem I am having.

Thanks everyone for the help!!

Matt

I would try the image with the icon as a vector mask, clipping path or opacity mask.

Is there any reason you must do this with 28344 paths and 967 compound paths instead of a simple image?

Sorry for the late reply.

No, there is no reason I can't use a simple image. I'm just not sure how to make it a simple image without losing quality.

How large will your icons be used? For web, for print?

Your foil looks vectorized which will become more obvious when blown up than a high quality image.

How did you create the foil texture in the first place?

I had a designer make them some time ago, and has since become totally unavailable unfortunately, so I have no idea exactly how they were made, and I can't get the original assets. I have searched to see if I can replicate the effect to no reasonable result.

Yes, I image traced the image (which is almost impossible to work with due to the amount of points and paths). What I show in the screenshot is only a portion of the actual image.

I want to use the foil asset for a number of things, both print and web.

Is there a reason you can't use the image without image tracing?

I think that's what Ton meant by 'simple image'.

Excellent, thank you so much for the help! That worked wonderfully, the opacity mask did exactly what I needed it to do. Think I avoided that because the word "opacity" gave me the idea that it was going to do something else.

I really appreciate everyone's help.

Good to hear that helped.

And, yes, the Opacity mask can do many things when using objects other than pure black or white.
