Thank you for the link Srishti but the update that they posted in your link still does not fix the problem and the discussion has already been closed.

Illustrator is crashing for me as well when I try and add another gradient to a layer. I'm successfully able to add one layer of gradient, then when I add one more, it crashes. This is really frustrating. I have the latest Mac OS update and using a MBP 2015. Latest version of Adobe CC as well.

I also have this problem. I'm using the most current version of illustrator on High Sierra and any time I use the gradient tool on an object, the program freezes and I have to force quit. Also happens when I apply a freeform gradient from the gradient window, but a linear and radial gradient work fine when applied from the window (not using the gradient tool). I tried resetting my preferences and that didn't help. It's been doing this for several weeks now (on every file I open/create) and I've restarted my computer many times in those weeks. Really disappointed to see people having trouble with this since January and still no solution.

Are you referring to the .ai file that was open when the crash happened? My files seem to be normal sized and the program stops responding even when it's a brand new document. All it takes is for me to try to use the gradient tool and I get the spinning wheel and eventually have to force quit.

I did exactly what ryan0075 recommended. Customer support did a remote access on my computer, spent half a day playing around with things and never could resolve the problem.

Have you updated to version 25.0 yet?
It seems to have fixed it, at least it has on my Mac running Mojave.

Yep I just updated to 25.0 and I am running Mojave as well. After updating I went right back in and tried to adjust the gradient and it locked up!

I just had this happen again, its not everytime, but it is frustrating.
1-i selected an object in my creative cloud saved file
2-opened the gradient control window (which was linear 0°not the default black white, but the custom 2 color white blue i used moments before)
3-dropped the color swatch of the selected object in the middle of that gradient span with the intention of replacing those 2 colors (yellow)
4-unexpected quit lost data.
my version 27.2 on mac 12.6.3 rgb document rgb colors swatches (doh! cmyk proof setup (secondary note-maybe alert for workspace mismatch))
hope this additional data helps adobe fix the crashing problem.

You might want to contact Customer Care: https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html They can login to your computer to check this out.

Same here, Illustrator 27.6.1 (and previous).

Please tell us some details: exactly how are you using gradients?
Also: did you already reboot the computer and (after the update) reset the preferences?

I'm using gradients as one uses gradients. It happens only in freeform gradients. It happened from the beginning. Had my prefs reset twice in the mean time if I remember it well. Also rebooted. It 'feels' like a memory thing. Maybe Illustrator should warn that you need at least ... memory to use it?
It's really irritating that also the helpdesk WITH EVERY PROBLEM says to reset the prefs first. Maybe it's time for Illustrator to fix that problem.

Because it's a known thing that Illustrator likes to have the preferences reset when updating.
This is a public forum and NOT the helpdesk. I tried out freeform gradients and I don't experience issues with them in version 27.6.1
How much RAM do you have installed?

Thank you for your reply Monika. Obviously many people are having problems with this but not you. And yes this is a public forum and not a helpdesk, so why bother asking me those questions.

People posting in this forum usually want to get help with their issues.
If you want to instead make a bug report, that would be over there: https://illustrator.uservoice.com The engineers do not read this forum. If you want to alert them of something, go to Uservoice.
And I'm asking about your amount of RAM, because you already suspect that you might not have enough. And just to give you the numbers: 8 GB of RAM is just enough to launch Illustrator and do some very basic tasks. 16 GB is the recommended minimum amount, but might not be sufficient for more complex tasks (large objects, complex patterns, transparency, 3D etc)

I can do every complex task (I'm a designer) with my 8 GB - except freeform gradient.
