Illustrator not letting me place .png or open .ai from within Illustrator ID: -54

I use illustrator daily and have been using it for the last few hours and for some reason now it wont let me place a .png or .svg file into my document. (for context it's specifically a logo I'm trying to place, it let me place one in the doc earlier this morning). The error message says "The File "_" is an unknown format and cannot be opened".

I've tried opening up the logo's .ai file to try copying and pasting from within illustrator. I keep getting a "Cant' open the illustrattion. The file is locked or in use. ID: -54"

I've tried restarting my computer and updating illustrator. I currently have version 27.5

Do the PNG and SVG images load properly when imported into other applications or dragged into a web browser window? I'm only asking this as a troubleshooting step to make sure the images are not somehow corrupted. Are these errors happening with any PNG or SVG files generated by your Adobe Illustrator installation? Or is it just certain files? I'm also wondering if there could be an issue with the Illustrator installation? Did this problem just start occurring after an update to Illustrator?

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post if it helps you get responses.

Thank you.

I've looked around and have found other people with kind of the same issue but the fixes for them did not work for me. I just don't want to spend time looking for needle in a haystack when I'm already loosing time on my work that needs to get done. Is there a way talk to an adobe support person directly?

Uh, I just asked a question. I don't know how that's a correct "answer," unless the question pointed to a solution. Oh well.

Were you getting the error messages when the original Illustrator file used to create PNG and SVG files was still open? Or is this happening when trying to open/place the PNG and SVG into another document after the original was closed?

Placing or opening when the documents were not open in illustrator. I was pulling from a folder and files that I've been using for 2 years and have never had an issue with.
