Opening files and/or moving art on the artboard, illustrator continuall freezes with "not responding" message. Seems like it is getting worse by the day. Any help?

Please tell us about your hardware, system, Illustrator version and the files.
Can be as simple as a computer reboot
Or preferences corruption
OOBE folder corruption
corrupt fonts
missing printer
files on network

Sorry to hear about this experience. I would request you try resetting Illustrator's preferences as suggested by Monika by following the steps shared in this article (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/troubleshoot-preference-issues.html) and sharing your observations.
Disclaimer: Please note that resetting preferences will remove all custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with the defaults. You may take a backup of these settings from the location mentioned in the article.

I followed these steps and continue to have problems.....illustrator slows to a crawl, then crashes

Thanks for confirming that, and sorry for the late response. I hope the problem is resolved by now. If not, kindly try running Illustrator under the root user account (macOS) or a different administrator account (Windows) and share your observations.
