I'm using the most recent version of Illustrator CC on a 2022 Mac Studio using MacOS Monterey.
I've never had this issue on my Windows computer and I'm hoping it's an easy fix for my Mac.
My cursor selection is not accurate, and as a Graphic Designer, it's very important that it is.
I've attached an example screenshot. I have my cursor hovering over one of the orange dots. The blue outline around the dot is telling me that, that orange dot will be selected when I click. However, the white square (a point on another orange dot) also pops up. When I click, it selects the white square on the OTHER orange dot that my cursor isn't even touching. Why does this happen and how can I fix this so that it only selects the item that my cursor is pointing to? Is this something I can change in my settings or is this something that can't be fixed and Mac users just deal with it?

How far are you zoomed in?
How is selection precision set up in the preferences?

Telling from your screenshot and the size of the arrow the dots are quite small. Does that also happen if you zoom in? Also according to the blue outline showing Smart Guides is on, too. Correct? Then I wonder why there is no additional information on the object you are hovering over, like the center point ot any anchor point. I cannot see this problem on my machine with macOS Monterey 12.6 but still on an Intel Chip. Do you have an Intel Mac you could try the file on?
