Illustrator Tabs visually changed in apperence

Occasionally upon opening Illustrator my tabs such as properties or image trace will open strangly, such as opening top to bottom of the screen, whereas my preference is that the properties tabs opens halfway and the image trace (set below it) opens the rest of the way to the bottom of the screen. Not only is the image trace tab using up all the vertical screen, but it has changed apperence to show large icons of trace options, whereas it used to show a list of options. What is going on and how do I fix it?
