I'm revising a file and a tilde appears in my text block arbitrarily.

Please show.
Also: what kind of file? An AI file?

Yes. AI Cloud version. It seems that the tilde shows up after I type a period at the end of a sentence. It's happened several times within this file. It's just text so I can't really show an example: ~ appears
I've shut the preference of Greeking off in a text box.

Can you please show this?
And please turn on the hidden characters.

Here is a screenshot.
I copied the first bulleted sentence and the tilde just showed up.

Hi,
Did it only happen one time or does it happen every time? If it happened once, just delete it.
Try copying a different paragraph. Does it happen again? When you select the paragraph, do you include the pilcrow?

One tilde appeared. I saw & went back to highlight it & the second one appeared.

Does that happen with other fonts as well?

In most cases, I copy an entire statement, including a return [pilcrow]. I normally do not see view hidden characters.
It is intermittent as to when the tilde pops up. In my second picture, it showed up in the middle of a 'word' while I was typing.
No pattern to the appearance.
I have not tried other fonts as of yet.

Here you are! I didn't get too far before the tilde appeared just typing in Arial Narrow.

How is your language set up? Illustrator, system, keyboard layout?
When was your last computer restart?
Do you have anything installed that changes your keyboard layout, enhances the typing, makes shortcuts?
Does this also happen with a different keyboard?

I restart computer EOD every work day.
Nothing extra installed.
How many keyboards do you have just hanging around?! I only have the one.
Windows updated over last weekend.
This just started one day ago. I use Illustrator daily.

I have a couple of keyboards lying around. Haven't counted them.
Can you try and reset preferences. Do it by renaming the folder so you can return in case it doesn't work.
You need to shut down Illustrator first, then rename the preferences folder:

Default prefs. Same thing happened.
Took me a little while to get through the 'crap' from the default prefs just to start new doc. Argh!
And I'm at work as well. I'm sure you know how that goes.....

I have exactly the same problem. Illustrator CC 2019 keeps adding tilde randomly in my textbox. I don't think this is a keyboard issue, since this does not happen in any other applications on my PC. Have you figured out what causes this problem? Any help is appreciated.

I have the same issue. Adobe never resolved. Were you able to fix yours?

I might have found the cause of this tilde problem in my case.
I have been using an application called "Caffeine" which prevents a PC from going to sleep. (Similar to Windows Mobility Center Presentation Mode"). I think this tilde problem disappeared after I stopped using Caffeine. My guess is that the application sends some signal mimicking keyboard or mouse action, and somehow Illustrator treats it as a tilde.
Maybe you want to try stopping any application that prevents your computer from going to sleep, if you are using one.

Interesting! I use caffeine too but I also could've sworn I had the issue before I downloaded the app. Will have to test it out, thanks so much! Did you find an alternative to use that works with AI?

At least the Windoes Mobility Center Presentation Mode does not cause Illustrator problem, but Microsoft has removed it from the usual package recently. I have not tested out other applications. Let me know if you find one that works.

You just saved my life! I have been working with AI and had the same issue for a while.. it was really bugging me.. guess what.. I TOO USE CAFFINE.
Thanks so much for this helpful information!!!

I use Caffeine too and that was the cause of the issue. By default it types an f15 characters x number of seconds. It has an option to use the shift key instead and I turned that on. So every once in a while you might get a shifted character but at least you don't get the tilde typing over everything. Of course you could turn off caffiene while you are using Illustrator but what can I say, I'm addicted to caffeine.
