Illustrator vectorize colors to one layer, not to each object?

I'm having a hard time vectorizing an image to three colors and having each color as one layer, not each vector object as one layer. Do I have to manually merge the layers or is there a fucntion I'm missing? Here is a screen shot.

I'd like three layers for each color instead of hundreds of them.

Those are not layers, but just objects.

Do you want them as objects or as layers?

In any case what you can do is: Select oneof the objects and then

Select > Same > Fill

Then either make a compound path (which will make them into one object)

Or move them to their own layer.
