I am trying to make some really simple color box changes within Acrobat. I edit in Illustrator as prompted, and the edit itself takes seconds, but the save bar is grayed out in Illustrator, so when I close out the file in Illustrator, there are no changes to the pdf document in Acrobat. I don't understand what I am doing wrong, or if there is a bug in the software. Please help.

Exactly what are you doing?
Please tell us the exact steps.

I am working on a pdf in Acrobat. When you need to edit a vector or such in acrobat, you have the option of opening it in Illustrator to make those changes, and that's what I am doing. There is an option to edit using illustrator, which is what I select. I select a text box with a yellow fill, and open it in illustrator. The box appears in illustrator, and I select it, change the color without issue, but then when I try to save it, the save button is grayed out.

Illustrator is not a pdf editor.
Do you know what app created the pdf? There maybe compounds paths, clipping masks etc that are preventing a "simple" edit...

I fully understand Illustrator is not a pdf editor. There is an option though within Acrobat to use Illustrator to update or edit color vectors and such, which is what I am trying to do. There is no problem opening the element in illustrator. That works fine, it just will not allow me to save the color change after completing that action in illustrator. Obviously, I have made a change, but it doesn't allow me to save it.

For me it works, but I need to save the file opened in Illustrator. After saving it opens a changed temp file in Acrobat, when I close that one, the original is updated.

"Illustrator is not a pdf editor."
That's not what's happening here. It is being used as a vector editor.
Anyway @gerrys73021290 , I am not seeing the same issue here with 27.5. It's working as expected. So, let's recap...when the object opens, does it properly have a temp file name starting with "Acr"? After the edit, do you simply CLOSE the file to repopulate it back into the PDF? (i.e. no Save or Save As used)
The PDF object might not be an object that an be edited.. such as highlighting or something added after te file was created.
Can you share a sample file?

Here is a screenshot of how the file name comes into illustrator from Acrobat.
From here, there is no issue selecting and changing the color of the object in question. Below are screen shots of the before and after in illustrator. An obvious change was made. Unfortunately, if I only do this, I cannot save the file, and when I close out, the changes do not populate back into the acrobat pdf file.
The problem is, when you try to save the changes in Illustrator, you can't. The save drop down is grayed out, and cntrl+S does not work either. The only way I could make it work was to draw a ghost box with no fill or stroke assigned, and then the save button was an option or cntrl+S. A tedious work around, but I did what I needed to do, which was to change the color of 35 text boxes. Something seems off, but that's why I am here. I can;t figure out what I am doing wrong, or if it's something related to the software.

Which version of Acrobat are you using?
My temp files (as Brad also mentioned) are starting with Acr, not like yours A9.
