Illustratror lags badly after last update

New Here ,
Oct 29, 2025 Oct 29, 2025

As the tilte says, Illustrator Iags quite badly after the last update (30.0). I have a pc with Windows 11, an Nvidia 3080 GPU and 64Gb of RAM, so it shouldn't be a problem of specs to low for what I'm doing.

I tried to upgrade my GPU driver, to close and reopen Illustrator, to restart my pc, to update windows, bat none of this helped. The only thing it seems to reduce the lag is to change the rendering settings from GPU to CPU (with CTRL+E). It is quite strange since my GPU works perfectly in any other workload, and looking at the task manger it doesn't even seem to throttle (it stays at around 20-25% usage at a temperature of 44°C) and the ram usage is at around 12-20Gb .

I need a fix for this, since it's quite a pain to draw with Illustrator with this kind of lag...

Hello @Massimo33337632fpcz,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Would you mind performing a clean reinstallation of the GPU(s) drivers (Intel / NVIDIA / AMD) and setting the Graphics Preference to High-Performance for Illustrator (https://adobe.ly/4qDqkkc) and checking if it helps? Also, try to run Illustrator under a different administrator account (Windows) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

**** additional new info after some tests ****
Lag does not happen in isolated view. For example if I group the whole design and double click on it to go into isolated view I experience no lag in zooming at all.
This might be a clue for devs.

****

Same here!

On average it takes 4sec after each zoom in or out scroll with the mouse wheel to regain control and to continue working.

No lag in previous versions. No matter if it'a a new file created in 30 or an old one.

Safe mode restart does nothing for me.

GPU acceleration and Animeted zoom settings make no difference if turned on or off.

Same here, it lags every time I pan around or zoom in or out. Freezes for about 3 seconds each time. Completely unusable.

To clarify: this does not happen with the previous version of Illustrator, only the most recent one (30.0).

Just as Releno_ said, before the 30.0 it worked fine for me, now every time I zoom or pan it lags.

I tried installing both Studio and Gaming drivers for my GPU, the Studio one (recommended) with a clear procedure, nothing has changed. I have just one account on my pc so I cannot switch to another one to try.

Hi @Anubhav M , now Illustrator works fine, it seems this fix to have solved my lag problems, thank you. Is there a way to re-import all my preference without bricking the program?

Hello @Massimo33337632fpcz,

Thank you for confirming that the issue has been resolved. To safely re-import your preferences, I recommend copying them one at a time and then relaunching Illustrator to verify that they are working correctly.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions or require assistance. We'd be happy to help.

Also confirming the solution worked for me.

Just an additional detail I'd like to point out: I noticed the Automatically Save Recovery Data dropdown is grayed out in the new version.

I had mine set to 15min but it seems like we can't change it in this new version. Maybe this could be the reason why importing our old preferences file caused some kind of conflict.

This could also be another unrelated bug, because we probably should be able to still choose the autosave intervals.

Thanks for the help!

Having to reset preferences all the time is such a huge killer of time and productivity. I just get things setup and it seems like something else happens and the solution is always "reset preferences".

I have the same issue, but for me, this solution doesn't work. Even with all custom settings removed, the zoom and panning is lagging as crazy. In this state, the program is not usable.

This solution did NOT work for me either.

Takes 4 seconds to redraw the guides and let me click on any artwork after simple zoom in or out. Panning is not affected in my case.
Previous version was fine.

No matter if I work on an old file or new one created in 30.

While I was making my last post, Illustrator crashed. I tried this suggestion of renaming the folders and re-launching Illustrator. Now I'm met with an error window when launching and Illustrator opens and won't do anything. Now what?

Can you please tell us your system specification and the hardware?

Also: can you try and boot your computer into Safe Mode and see if that helps? Note: this is just a test whether the issue is caused by something else that you have installed.

I have an HP Z4 Workstation, 4GB Xeon processor and 128GB RAM running Window 11 for workstations. I have ran the same programs for the last 14 years and use them daily- The Adobe suite plus Framemaker, Siemens Teamcenter, NX and JT2Go,  Microsoft Office, and our database program PowerLink. I installed 30.0 on the day of it's release and it seemed ok but this last week it has started to let me down in a huge way. Luckily, I was able to rename the renamed folders back to their original names (removing the .old) and Illustrator is "working" again. I'm sure it will work the same as before (constant freezing for seemingly easy tasks) so I might just go back to the last stable-ish version of 29 (29.6.1). I have a ton of work to do and deadlines to meet. I depend on Illustrator working correctly and I can't be fiddling around with my computer all day trying to get Illustrator to do what it's supposed to do. It is the only program that I use for work that let's me down on a consistent basis (Acrobat is a close second).

You have a lot of things running there and it's not your run-of-the-mill environment (this particular environment is probably not included in the standard testing environments). So updating to a .0 version in the middle of huge projects is probably not a good idea. So maybe going back to what worked for you could be the best thing to do.

Hello @B_C_E_75,

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing performance issues with Illustrator. Would you mind trying the suggestions shared in this help article (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/optimize-illustrator-performance.html) and checking if they help?

Also, try performing a clean reinstallation of the GPU(s) drivers (Intel / NVIDIA / AMD) and setting the Graphics Preference to High-Performance for Illustrator (https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/faqs/GPU-110.html) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

@Anubhav M
I tried all the steps few days ago and NO change at all. And I do use font manager (Extensis Connect).

This is clearly internal Illustrator BUG since zooming with keys (ctrl + +, or ctrl + -) has NO LAG. Only zooming with mouse scrool wheel creates 2-6 sec lag.

To not go in indefinite loops:
- Yes, I tried the "optimize performance steps" and NO it made no difference (including the steps with GPU driver)

- Previous version of Illustrator if installed has NO LAG. On the same system at the same time

- I tried with old cable mouse and there is still same LAG when using scroll wheel.

- NO LAG if I use keyboard shortcuts (on the same AI file!)

- No matter if it is a newly created AI file with just one element or a complex older one. Same effect.
- files are on GEN 4 SSD and as said there is no lag in previous version of AI on the same system
- uninstalled Logi+ software, no change

Please start treating it as a BUG and not as a performance issue (NO LAG WITH KEYS!)!

Complete system info in the screenshot attached.

What about if you're on a Mac? I have the same issue of terrible performance and large RAM usage when using the program after updating to 30.0.

Tested on Macbook PRO M2 pro and I do not have these issues.

Zooming with scroll wheel is fast and no lag is present.
So it is just Windows system for me that is affected by this.

Funny how zooming with keys is fine on both OS.

Hello @Alex Bangerter,

That does seem troubling. Would you mind trying the suggestions shared here (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/not-enough-memory-illustrator-cc.html) and checking if they help?

Additionally, please confirm the version of the OS installed and whether Illustrator behaves this way when working with specific files or using a particular tool/feature, along with a small screen recording of the problem, so we can better assist you.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I've been waiting about 5 minutes now to see if 30.0 is going to recover from yet another "not responding' error. Initially 30.0 seemed really stable, but this week it has been freezing constantly. Switching tools? Not responding. Pan with the space bar? Not responding. Select same color strokes? Not responding. It's not just these specific things, but I do these a lot get tons of crashes. Sometimes it comes out of it, but other times I have to restart the program. It's so random too. We are so busy at work and this is just killing my productivity.
